THE CHALLENGE

Limitorque actuators control the flow of critical substances — water, chemicals, oil, gas — at industrial plants around the world. When something needs to be configured, adjusted, or diagnosed, the person responsible is standing next to the equipment, phone in hand, often in a noisy, demanding environment where there is no room for confusion.

FlowSync is the mobile application those people use. It connects wirelessly to Limitorque actuators and gives field engineers and plant managers the ability to configure their equipment, monitor performance, and diagnose issues in real time — without shutting down operations or calling for technical support.

The legacy version was not built around that reality. The interface was slow, disjointed, and disconnected from Flowserve’s evolving digital brand. For a product used in high-stakes industrial environments — where a wrong configuration can have serious operational consequences — friction in the interface is not just a UX problem. It is a safety and reliability problem.

The challenge was to redesign FlowSync as a genuinely customer-centered mobile product — one built around how plant managers and field engineers actually work, in the conditions they actually work in.

THE PROCESS

01Field context and user understanding

Plant managers and field engineers are not sitting at desks — they are standing next to heavy industrial equipment, often in loud and challenging physical environments, completing precise configuration tasks that cannot afford error. I directed the UX audit through that lens — mapping every task flow against the realities of field use, identifying where the legacy interface created friction, confusion, or risk.

02Interface system and mobile design direction

I established the visual and interaction design direction for the redesigned application — a modular mobile interface system optimized for field use. Clear dashboard hierarchy, intuitive navigation, diagnostic screens that surface the right information at the right moment, and configuration flows that reduce the chance of error. I directed the UX designer through every screen — Bluetooth connection flows, user role selection, license management, and diagnostic interfaces — until each met the standard.

03Brand and accessibility integration

The redesign brought FlowSync into alignment with Flowserve’s digital brand standards and ADA accessibility requirements — making it feel like a modern Flowserve product. In a customer-facing application, brand consistency is not cosmetic. It is a signal of quality and reliability before the user has done a single thing.

04Cross-functional implementation

I directed the handoff and implementation process across design, engineering, and IT — maintaining design integrity from wireframe to final build. Keeping a complex industrial mobile application consistent through an enterprise development process requires constant advocacy. I owned that relationship throughout.

THE WORK

“Most brand directors have never shipped a product. FlowSync is a mobile application used daily by real customers in demanding industrial environments to manage mission-critical equipment. The interface either reduces cognitive load in a high-stakes field environment or it does not. FlowSync does.”
